“Thanks, Hugh. I really appreciate you doing this for me,” Jack said as he took the proffered manila envelope from Hugh’s hand, quickly setting it out of sight on his lap.

“I’m nervous as hell about this but I’m actually happy to help, Jack. The more I’ve thought about this the more I feel it’s the right thing to do. But please keep a lid on this…you know I could be in legal hot water for sharing this with you. Hell, technically, I could lose my medical license…even go to jail!”

Jack smiled dourly and nodded. “I know, Hugh, I know - I didn’t make this request lightly. Hell, I almost didn’t make it at all. Again, trust me, nobody will ever know about this.”

“I’m relieved to hear that, Jack, and because it’s you saying it, I can feel reassured that’ll be the case.”

“Cross my heart,” Jack quipped, smiling as he moved a hand across his chest in the childhood gesture.

McNard glanced at his watch.

“Whoa! The time’s gotten away from me – I’d better get going, Jack.” He winked at Jack. “Don’t want to raise any suspicions with anyone now, do I?

Jack smiled wanly and shook his head slowly. “No, Hugh, let’s not do that.”

The men exchanged small talk briefly as they quickly finished their meals. After paying their tab and donning their coats the men left the eatery, walking together down the sidewalk toward Hugh’s car.

Doug hurriedly followed them, stealthily strolling behind them at a distance, intermittently stopping to look in a storefront window while still being careful to not let the men get too far ahead. Doug constantly scanned the areas ahead of the other two men, searching for a spot that might present him an opportunity to confront Jack and, hopefully, kill him. Normally, special operators like Doug preferred not to do things without significant planning but this opportunity was too great for him to let it slip by; he knew he’d just have to improvise.
